Day Care

Day care is provided on campus by the Hands On Early Learning Center Ltd. and is managed by Tobi Horon, who has worked on campus at the day care for more than 30 years. Outstanding child care is offered during the academic year as well as during the summer months.

The Hands On Early Learning Center provides 40 accredited spaces, primarily for the care of children of Lethbridge College students (and staff members if space is available) from 19 months to school age. Parents should apply early for a spot as there is a waiting list. Fee rates are available upon request and government subsidies are available to qualified parents.

We have a highly qualified staff of professional caregivers with a combined experience of nearly 100 years. All staff have either an ECE diploma or certificate, and each holds a St. John's Emergency Child Care Certificate. Our staff is committed to quality care for each child who comes through our door.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hours is the day care open?
The day care is open year round from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

What is the cost of day care?

Day care fees are set each year in August. Full-time care is considered 100 hours or more per month. Anything less than 100 hours is charged an hourly rate. Parents contract hours upon registration. There is a $50 (subject to change) registration fee to hold your child's position.

What will my child be doing while at the day care?
We believe that children learn best through play. The day is set up to allow opportunities for both self-directed and teacher-directed opportunities.

Where is the day care?
We are situated on campus within easy access to classrooms. A spacious outside play area is situated directly outside the day care.

Are meals and snacks provided?
Meals are provided by the Hands On Early Learning Center and include the four food groups. Snacks are provided both in the morning and the afternoon. If your child requires a specific diet, you will be asked to supply it.

What happens if my child gets hurt or sick?
All staff have their Emergency Child Care certificate and are able to care for minor cuts and bruises. There is a registered nurse on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, September through April. A doctor is also in attendance for part of each day. If a child becomes sick or hurt, the parent will be contacted in class and asked to take the child home.

Can I visit the day care?
We have an open-door policy and parents are welcome to visit at most times of the day. If it upsets your child when you leave, it might be advisable to spend time only upon arrival and pick-up.

Can parents become involved in the day care?
If you have a special talent, or would like to help in any way, your participation is welcomed. All parents are invited to become involved in the parent committee to the Hands On Early Learning Center, which also serves as a support group for student parents.
