ACE Goals & Objectives

Goals

The primary goal of conducting applied research through ACE is to provide five major benefits to our internal and external stakeholders:

  1. Contribute to developing the present and future workforce;
  2. Produce graduates of high quality;
  3. Promote direct application of research results;
  4. Create partnerships with industry to sustain economic development; and
  5. Increase institutional capacity for contract applied research and other service activities to the community, business and industry.

Objectives

ACE endeavors to meet important social, economic, environmental, educational, and recreational needs by vigorously working to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Support the development of an applied research culture across the College, with an underlying philosophy of excellent research, a commitment to collaboration, and an emphasis on applicability to the field.
      
  2. Support and conduct applied aquaculture research in the areas of
    • Cold water species
    • Warm water species
    • Shellfish and invertebrate culture (mollusk culture)
    • Feeding and nutrition
    • Canal and reservoir culture, including biological weed control
    • Brood fish, including genetics and sterility
    • Captive breeding
    • Design and engineering of aquaculture systems
    • Water quality
    • Effluent management
    • Aquaponics
    • Value-added economic development
        
  3. Attract high quality faculty-researchers and develop their research capacity.
      
  4. Support and provide, as appropriate, educational training programs through technology transfer in the areas of
    • Aquaculture technology
    • Fish and wildlife technology
    • Water resources management
    • Computer control systems
    • Business Administration (Marketing)
    • Communications: Advertising and Public Relations
    • Culinary Careers
    • Agriculture Technology (Animal Science)
        
  5. Operate a fish health and disease laboratory that provides cost-recovery diagnostic services and educational programs.
      
  6. Support economic development opportunities related to marketing aquaculture products and services as well as tourism.
      
  7. Increase applications and success rates in external funding competitions.
      
  8. Reflect and enhance the distinctive role of Lethbridge College in the postsecondary system.
