Another year, another semester, another paged turn, whichever way you word it, it’s a new year. I enjoy the New Year because there is some uncertainty and excitement for what the next year will bring. The New Year gives people the opportunity to set out some guidelines or a path to get them on “track” in January but also an opportunity to reflect on the year prior. I look back on 2011 and it amazes me at what I accomplished and the wonderful and unpredictable things that happened. I look forward to what 2012 has to offer and I hope those of you reading are excited too.
Have you made your resolutions? I have, and I totally agree with Alex that you should always set attainable goals. One of my resolutions is to be on time to my classes because for some reason 8:00a.m classes and I aren’t the best of friends. On Tuesday I showed up at 8:05a.m and my teacher commented jokingly on how I was an hour early for class… that started at 8:00a.m (sorry Mom) – at least I’m off to a good start. Another resolution I set for myself is to keep sociable which may sound funny but I’ve made a lot of friends through school and after this I may not get to see them as much so I may as well make the best of it. Lastly, I want to be a healthier person, I know I’m not perfect, nor will I ever be but if I can make the conscious effort to make healthier choices it will only benefit me.

Like I said in the beginning I like to reflect in the New Year, so what happened in 2011 that made it a great year? My parents had the opportunity to move to Norway which allowed my brother and I to travel and visit with them. The friends, jobs, experiences and opportunities the Lethbridge College has given me are experiences I will never forget. 2011 gave me new friends and an amazing man, Jason. What did 2011 give us globally? We know that as a community – locally, country-wide and globally we have definitely gone through a lot this last year but rather than focusing on the negative I am going to provide some top comical trends and serious achievements(obviously in no order of importance).
- Top Song of 2011 was “Friday” by Rebecca Black… okay, you got me, it was actually Lady Gaga – Poker Face – named one of the best songs of 2011 after hitting #1 on the charts in over ten countries… no comment.
- Did you know? Prince William and Kate Middleton got hitched – in case you don’t have a TV, radio, go out in public/ talk to anyone or walk by tabloids
- A fitness trend of 2011 was… drum roll please… planking.
- A social media top for 2011 was the use of #hashtags brought on by Twitter
- Ashton Kutcher replacing Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men
- Top Obsessions included Netflix, the new iPhone (love it), the Kardashians, and couponing
- December 15, 2011 – the United States government declares the end to the Iraq War (two thumbs up)
- Canada had historical election results – NDP is Canada’s Official Opposition and Green Party got their first seat in the House of Common’s ever
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was the top movie with a worldwide gross income of $1.3 million
- The debate on whether there will be a December 22, 2012 – again… no comment.
Cheers to a great New Year!
