New Years Resolutions 101

Every person at one point in time has set a goal for themselves for the New Year. To achieve this goal they plan to start right on January 1st and be consistent on working towards it. This goal could be to quit smoking, study harder, get active, eat healthy etc.

I admit, I have been one of those people who set a goal for myself for the new year and haven’t always followed through.  Part of my new years resolution this year is to actually follow through on my goal. So here are some tips that I have for myself, and for you the reader to be successful with your New Years Resolutions for 2012.

1. Don’t set the bar too high. Many people “talk the talk” but don’t “walk the walk.” Instead of saying, I am going to lose 70 pounds by April, try setting a more attainable goal like trying to fit into that pair of jeans or dress. By targeting a more attainable goal, you will be more likely to see results.

2. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. It is difficult for the average person to achieve one new years resolution, so why set 5 or even 6 for yourself? Choose the most pressing issue at hand-losing weight, finding a girlfriend, improving your relationship with your parents-and concentrate on that.

3. Tell everyone you know. The more people you tell your resolution to, the more you’ll have supporting you. There is no shame in asking for help if you need assistance in meeting your goals.

4. Reward Yourself. By doing this, it is a reminder and a treat for your accomplishments.

I really feel that if you follow these four steps this year you will meet and maybe even exceed the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. It is never too late to start, just because we are a few weeks into January does not mean that you have to wait until next year. Find something you would like to accomplish and start working on it today!
